Conversing with Cameron Webb
October 1, 2018 • 4 minute read
Cameron Webb is a Director and the Head of Branding and Creative at Infinite Global, with 20 years of experience in the development of global B2B brands and communications. This conversation — where Cam shares the professional experiences that shaped his career, and his advice for the next generation of PR and branding professionals — concludes our focus on our London team members.
Tell me about your professional life before coming to Infinite Global, and the experiences where you learned the most.
I have gained so much from each of the places where I have worked, and have been fortunate to work on a wide variety of brands and projects.
Working at KPMG, for instance, was hugely transformative for me. I was there for fifteen years, a period that enabled me to grow significantly. I started as a graphic designer and by the end I was managing the KPMG brand across Europe, working alongside organizations like Interbrand and Brand Union to apply the brand in scenarios that ranged from sponsored London river bus fleets to European headquarters buildings. It gave me a deep sense of what developing and operating a brand really entails.
Most recently I was at one of Europe’s largest independent agencies, working with the UK Prime Minister’s office on the Britain is GREAT brand. From having meetings at Downing Street to talking with ambassadors who represent Britain around the world, it was a remarkable experience and an honor to do something meaningful for my country.
As Head of Brand, what goals do you have for Infinite Global?
I am a problem solver at heart. I love working with leaders to define a business’s purpose and bring their ambitions to life; it’s what gets me out of bed in the morning. Ultimately what we are working to do here at Infinite Global is to apply solid principles of branding to complex, sophisticated companies — helping our clients solve their most important business problems.
What is your advice for younger PR and branding professionals?
Carl Radley, a man I hugely respect in the industry, always said, “The harder I work, the luckier I seem to get.”
This is one of my favorite quotes. It captures the mindset of what it should mean to build a successful enterprise — whether a company or a career. There are so many factors; much is out of your hands. But the more you work, the more you show passion and jump at opportunities to learn, the more those opportunities seem to come along.
My career turning point came at KPMG: It was the moment I started working on the global brand alongside these really smart people. It clicked in place that this was the thing that I most wanted to do in my career. Once you know what you want to do, what you love to do, the rest just becomes so much easier.
I do feel a great deal of respect for the upcoming generation, those who are getting out of school right now. They are facing unparalleled societal pressures, from lack of affordable housing to the changing environment. But what I see from the younger people I work with is a great sense of openness, and a willingness to challenge the norm — to be transformative — and I feel hope for the future as a result.
Tell us about your life outside of work.
Lately, I have been reading a lot more management books. I just finished and really enjoyed Radical Candor by Kim Scott. The rest of my time I’m what some call a MAMIL (middle-aged man in Lycra; sorry for the visual). I try to cycle as much as I can, and I have recently tried indoor climbing as well. I’m currently lining up a canoeing lesson too. You could call it my midlife crisis!
What are your plans for the future?
I still have plenty of ambitions. I want to deliver truly innovative branded experiences for our clients. I want to drive the progressive thinking in our business and help the industries we serve to evolve and transform, so they are better equipped to face the threats as well as take full advantage of all the opportunities the future holds.
