It has evolved over decades, but awareness has accelerated in the last two years.
The rise of generative AI following the 2022 release of ChatGPT has heightened media focus on its implications, not least including risk, regulation and the application of existing law to the new world of AI. Mentions of AI in law subsequently rose dramatically in 2023. However, as AI expectations have shifted towards what Gartner calls the “trough of disillusionment,” media attention has flattened, perhaps signalling a move towards pragmatism and AI as ‘business as usual’.
Professional services firms face new reputational risks in this context, whether they are seeking to gain ground as innovators, or protect from the competitive threat posed by first movers and fast followers.
